by far, in wil’s and my opinion…alton brown is the best food network chef. we can’t get enough of him…
we may not make his recipes all the time (especially right now with our plain rice only diet…thanks to you, mr. government), but any time his show good eats is on, we switch over. it trumps anything on the tv guide at that moment (note: exceptions to that rule are lost and project runway and the office- well, the new ones).
there’s something about his witty, scientific banter, his kooky vignettes and characters, and his step by step procedures (and if you know me and wil, we appreciate well thought out lists and instructions) that we absolutely love. we’ve become so nutty over this show that we have specific games we play as we watch. those games include the following:
-count how many times he says “thusly”
-be the first to guess what the ingredients are as he pours them out of their preportioned glass cups
-spot the store brand foods in his pantry that we buy too
-try to recognize which grocery store he’s standing in before it pops up on the screen
yes, we understand we are total nerds, but at least we aren’t watching something extra geeky like mythbusters…ok, totally kidding…we love that show too. last night, an episode we had not seen was coming on…about espresso. previously planning on putting oceans thirteen on, the trump rule came into effect and we watched this instead. what can beat alton brown and coffee combined? seriously! to say the least, besides a few minor variations in theories, wil was very excited to discover that alton was pretty much spot on with wil’s/starbucks’ coffee mentality. every few minutes ago, wil was nodding his head in approval and excitement.
the thirty minute lesson about coffee coming from the screen and from the man sitting next to me at the same time was very revealing to me. it was very cool to see that to wil, coffee is not just his job anymore. he truly has a passion about the entire process. it’s so much more than a cup of caffeine…it’s about the journey of the beans, the roasting, the brew, the drink and the enjoyment. let him make you something next time you see him…you’ll know a lot of precision, perfection and passion went into that cup.
p.s. totally unrelated: mom…the sofa is under the front window where the two armless chairs used to be. just fyi. : )
