complaint department

could construction be any more irritating?

our condo development is currently redoing the siding on all the buildings (yay!). it’s a great improvement, as the old gray/blue wood siding was starting to peel and rot in many places and it just looked shaggy. we will soon have an updated look with light taupe siding and fresh white trim.

but to actually go through this process is such a thorn in my side!

  • first it started when they ripped out half of our patio a week ago, so that you can see directly through to our neighbors very messy patio and door, and people have a clear view through our sliding door (luckily we have curtain).
  • now, the last few days there have been 2-3 workers ripping off stuff and hammering in new siding. it feels and sounds like they are hammering directly into my head, ALL DAY. they pound so hard that a candle actually slid off of the shelf above the tv onto the floor. i decided that this is probably what it feels like to be a fish, when people tap and knock on the glass of their bowls.
  • in order to put the new siding up, they have had to rip everything extra off…lights, our mailbox, etc. i have no idea where my mailbox is and if we’ve even gotten mail in the last two days. i doubt the mailman knows where it went either. they loosened our cable box also, and let it dangle along the wall, thus cutting out our internet and tv for a day and a half.
  • when i need to escape, i can’t because their trash and equipment are strewn about everywhere in front of the door. and their ladder is right in front of the door, so i have to ask one of them to move everything everytime i want to leave, so i don’t swing open the door and knock him off.
  • they also seem to have gotten very comfortable here the last few days, and so i not only get to listen to pounding as i sit at the computer, but also to their whistling and excited conversations between one another…which i can’t understand.

i miss having the blinds open and seeing the world! oh well, our outside wall is only so big. i hope they finish up soon. my one worry: we will possibly have new windows installed in the future, so we might have to go through all of this again…

p.s. happy summer solstice!

annoying

i am extremely frustrated right now.

not only am i behind on getting cards in the mail for father’s day, but the batch of cards that took more time and energy to get than normal are not sitting on my desk sealed and ready, but in the hallmark bag, on some random shelf in office depot (of course along with other purchased items).

i have searched the entire house and car and can’t find them, and due to the limited spots they could “hide” in, my only assumption is that they are sitting next to a demo laptop in the nashville office depot. (i was playing a few rounds of solitaire as wil paced the aisles for some cord or cable at 8:15 in the evening)

and of course, i only realize the loss now that it is 10:30, way past closing. i am stuck without father’s days cards to fill out. sorry dad’s. hopefully you all know how much wil and i love you, even besides the fact that i have dropped the ball and that they will be in your mail box way past sunday…if i can even get them back.

home, healthy and happy

we made it! wil and i are home in nashville and it feels great. although i lied, i am not completely healthy…i came down with a terrible sore throat and cold yesterday and am in the brunt of it right now.

while on our trip we got an email letting us know our wedding pictures are online and ready to view! so i thought i’d pass this link on to you to check them out.

www.collages.net

once there, under “view an event,” type in hansen as the username and 8533 as the password. there is no need to register or give all your information…just an email address and name.

after you are in the album, you can either mill around each folder, and see thumbnails of the images, or watch the webshow, which is a slide show of all the pictures. warning: there are a lot, as this is every photo!!!! and if you are interested, you can buy professional prints directly through the site.

enjoy!

day number last

the last day of the cruise has come to an end. and i must say, i think i am ready to get off the boat. ready to get to work and school and life? no, but i am ready to put my two feet on solid ground and get comfortable at home with my husband. although we technically deboard the ship tomorrow, it feels like we are leaving tonight as we have to have everything packed and ready by midnight.

but the day itself, you ask? ah, i guess i should follow suit of our past entries and give you a narrative of the day….after a regular morning of me dinking around and ordering room service breakfast while wil slept, we decided to get on top of our packing and get most of it out of the way, so we wouldn’t be stuck with everything tonight after the show. we surprisingly have lots of space in all of our suitcases…but i guess that’s what happens when you don’t buy anything. : )

around 11:30 we made our way to an early lunch to catch nothing else but “towel folding.” yep, we actually went to a towel folding demonstration. but let me explain: just like the fancy napkins at dinner time (which we learned yesterday), our room attendants leave us a different animal every night made with towels on our bed. it was more fun than you’d think, being able to twist and fold a towel into animals like a monkey, dog or elephant.

we didn’t have anything on our schedule after folding towels, but on our way to the elevators, we walked through the casino. wil, with his eagle eye caught something interesting on one of the 25ยข slot machines. there was an unplayed credit left on one of the machines! since no one was nearby, we pulled the crank and what?! we won 5 quarters! completely taken by surprise by our unexpected win, we decided to cash out and just use the quarters one by one in different machines just for the heck of it. 4 quarters lost later, on our last quarter we won again! we couldn’t stop laughing at our mini bits of luck, and every time we won we’d just keep playing one quarter in a different machine, seeing what would happen. we ended up playing for almost ten minutes, going down the number of slot machine rows, always winning 2 or 5 more quarters when we got down to the last few in our hand. even though we won about only $5 over the course of our casino adventure, and left empty handed, we were in good spirits and entertained, as it didn’t cost us anything to begin with.

when we finally made it to the elevator, we headed upstairs and chilled out in the room for a couple hours until our next activity. and i mean chilled out…we tried to sit on the veranda, but it was very obvious that we were not in the caribbean anymore. the atlantic waters were dark and choppy and the wind had quite a nip to it! i plopped on the bed to finish my book instead while wil hung around inside.

next stop: bingo! after an hour or so in the room, we walked down to the theatre for the final jackpot bingo. as we grabbed our seats we caught the end of the “karaoke idol” finals (which we did not stay the previous night due to lameness and poor vocals). there was definitely some talent, young and old in the final few that we saw. but the theatre soon thinned out once idol was over and prepared for the huge upcoming game. this was the bingo of all bingos…a jackpot that had rolled over everyday from the first day on this boat, with a pot totaling over $11,000!!!! while i didn’t want to get my hopes up, i still secretly thought ‘maybe it could be us!’ well, no cliffhanger here: we didn’t win. i was actually only 2 numbers away when the guy a couple rows in front of us started jumping up and down. the butterflies in my stomach from our potential win immediately fell flat, and wil and i were bummed. we left with our heads hung low and stuffed our loser bingo cards in the trash.

so what was the best remedy for sad faces? ice cream! two cones of soft serve later we were back in our rooms with high spirits again. with another spell of time between then and our next event, we practiced our napkin folding. can you tell we are running out of things to do on the boat?

dinner approached a lot faster than we thought (my fault: i read my watch an hour off last time we checked), so we made a quick change and dash to the dining hall. dinner was good as usual; it was a full meal of shrimp, hummus, spinach dip, french onion soup, ny strip and mahi mahi tempura (plus dessert). we were completely stuffed by the end, but we enjoyed our last meal. we took the chance to reminisce and share our favorite ports, meals, days, etc of the whole trip, as well as admire the amazing ocean and sky right outside of our window. i know we won’t forget this honeymoon forever!

after dinner it was back to the theatre for our headline show. tonight was the crew of singers and dancers performing the premiere of their new show “vibeology.” a runthrough of some legendary periods and artists (elvis, motown, janet/michael jackson, mtv/radio, etc), this show was the best by far, with some good songs, great dancing, and some neat stunts with dancers swinging over the audience from cloth with their own strength. i was glad to see this show and not skip out on it like we had some of the other nights.

anyways, we are back in our room again and wil is cracking up behind me as he watches the crock hunter on tv. i think i will wrap up and get him to help me finish packing since we only have an hour to get the luggage outside our door. goodnight!

2 days left

well, today began like any other… we slept through the morning. all the way to 9am when kristen woke up to write her belated post. since she was doing some writing, i decided it was the perfect time to catch a couple extra hours of sleep. so, at 11 i rose and showered for the day while kris typed away. once she was ready as well we headed up to the buffet for lunch. it was the regular stuff with the daily ’spin’ and we stuffed ourselves full.

today we had no islands to visit, no streets to walk, no beaches to lie on, and no restaurants to find. it was us, the boat and the 3000 other passengers aboard. we picked out a couple of things to do from the daily list and made our way through the day.

our first stop was the afternoon trivia. we played and did much better than we have in the past. i think we had 22 out of a possible 27! …though still not good enough for first place and a royal caribbean keychain.
next on our list was a napkin folding seminar! we were joined by the lovely ‘pippa’ (one of our cruise director staff) and a waiter from the dining room. we practiced folding napkins into fans, bishob hats, boots, florida lillies, and birds of paradise. as lame as it sounds, it was pretty fun to be able to fold them. maybe we can bring our new talent back home and impress some of our dinner guests.

tonight was our second formal night and since we had to get ready for that and attend the ice show tonight, we headed back to the room early. kristen wore a very nice glittery gold dress that was dazzling and i wore my suit. here is a shot of kris putting on her shoes… and a shot of us at the rink

we headed down to the ice skating rink and found some seats. the ice show was alright; there was some pretty good skating, but there was also some pretty lame skating. it was entertaining and once finished, we headed over to the dining room for dinner.

being the last formal night, tonight was lobster night. yep… once on every cruise they serve lobster and it is usually my favorite. while it was extremely tasty, it wasn’t the best i’ve ever had. kristen had a prime rib that seemed pretty good, she wasn’t really into the lobster. here’s a picture of my food

if you haven’t figured out… we’re running out of photo opportunities =D

so, after dinner, we headed back to the schooner bar (our favorite) for another round of trivia. we didn’t play as well this round… but were stuck working with some old couple from new jersey. oh-well. tomorrow is our last chance to win a keychain… fingers crossed!

after our uneventful round of trivia, we opted to skip the show (another that sounds ‘awesome’) and head back to the room for a bit of relaxation. tonight was the gala buffet and we had some time to kill before the viewing and eating.

we started out by making our way down to the dining room. there was an enormous line so we took a quick peek and headed back to the promenade for the ‘island parade’ … which was… interesting. when it finished, we hurried down to the first floor of the dining room for the opening of the chef’s gala buffet. there were some pretty awesome ice sculptures, and some incredible looking food. kris and i both grabbed a plate and grabbed a couple things. we were both still pretty full after dinner to have yet another buffet.

instead of sitting in the dining room to eat, we rushed past the endless lines of people and back to our room; i snagged some silverware off a nearby table. we sat out on our veranda and had our food. yum! so now we are going to get some sleep; we’ve got another big day tomorrow filled with eating and lounging! i’m tired; goodnight.
